New Ideas in the International Building Code (IBC) and the ICC A117.1
2:00pm - 3:30pm
Description
As technologies change and new ideas come forward as ‘best practice’ for full inclusion, the International Codes has added requirements into the codes and standard to address these items.
This program explores the most impactful accessibility changes in the 2021 International Building Code (IBC), International Existing Building Code (IEBC) and the referenced accessibility standard, 2017 ICC A117.1. As the 2021 IBC is adopted and enforced by local and state governments, accessibility codes across the USA will noticeably change. Meanwhile the Federal DOJ 2010 ADA Standards remain unchanged and yet both documents must be applied simultaneously. Some changes, such as the ‘Building Block’ provisions of the ICC A117, are significant; including larger clear floor spaces and turning spaces and new requirement for 90 degree turns. This presentation will explain the new accessibility criteria elements such as diagonal and street parking, electrical vehicle charging stations, automatic doors, bottle filling stations, enhanced classroom acoustics, sign language interpreters stations, gaming machines and table, etc. The 2017 edition of ICC A117.1 also includes a new way to look at items such as curb cuts/blended transitions and service counters. How the International Codes meets or exceed the 2010 ADA Standard will be part of the discussion.
Prerequisite Knowledge: This is a highly advanced course for professional practitioners in design, construction and code administration. Participants will benefit by having a thorough grasp of accessible design principles found in both the previous editions of the international model codes, and the DOJ 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. Knowledge of the variety and types of constantly evolving mobility devices will enhance the student take-away of the reasons behind the ‘Building Block’ category of these changes.
Individuals will be able to submit questions for the speaker in advance during the registration process.
Human Generated Real-Time Captioning will be provided for this session.
