- The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is asking for people’s opinions (until April 8, 2024) on its proposal to make emergency video alerts available in American Sign Language (ASL) and in certain non-English languages.
- The FCC decided on some new rules last year. These rules say that wireless providers must put out certain emergency alerts in thirteen of the most commonly spoken languages in the US, as well as in ASL. People can also choose to get these ASL alerts.
- The FCC is asking people to share their thoughts on 18 different emergency message examples in 13 languages and ASL. They also want to know how well the ASL videos work, and what people think of their style and how they’re made.
- The FCC hopes to reach more people by requiring wireless providers to broadcast emergency alerts in ASL and languages other than English through the Emergency Alert System.
